Part E.

Protection against sound.

Approved Document E deals with three situations in new or change of use dwellings and RRPs:

E1 - protection against sound from adjoining buildings or other parts of the building

E2 – protection against sound within dwellings or Rooms for Residential Purposes (RRP's) between a bedroom or room with a WC and other rooms

E3 – reverberation within internal common areas

E4 – Acoustic conditions in schools

There are limited situations covered by E1 where entrance doors need to provide acoustic performance. Doors between communal corridors and rooms in flats or Rooms for Residential Purposes (RRP's) should have good perimeter seals (including the threshold) and achieve the following minimum requirements:

Sound reduction index of 29 Rw dB or mass per unit area of 25 kg/m2 noisy parts of the building should have a lobby or a high performance doorset, or nearby flats should be similarly protected. The provisions of E2 do not apply to internal walls within dwellings with doors. However, Part E recognises that lightweight doors with poor (or no) perimeter seals will reduce effective sound insulation of the wall. So, good perimeter sealing or use of a doorset is recommended to improve this.

within the educational sector.
